The current global economic threat by Covid-19 virus provides insight into the need for quick and collective global response in time like this. It is also an appropriate time to reflect on technological decentralization and deployment, especially rapid diagnostics, and vaccine development.

It is estimated, for instance, that more than 65% of rapid diagnostic kits (including HIV, malaria, TB etc) produced globally are targeted at low resource areas, which include rural Africa. In Africa, however, 85% of these kits are imported. This economic inequalities, strategic exclusion and innovation disconnection, among other factors have hampered biotech development and advancement, slow response to outbreaks, as well as employment deprivation.

Our solution: We firmly believe that manufacturing rapid diagnostics kits closer to the environment where they are needed most would not only create employment opportunities, but would also be a measure for rapid monitoring, response, as well as speedy scale up during outbreak. Our approach is in line with 2030 UN sustainable development goal of public health improvement and poverty eradication.

We are joining forces with our global technology partners to kick off our ambitious 2020 pilot manufacturing project and campaign (#ImpactMoreImportLess). This pilot initiative will seek to dissect risk management, challenges and investment opportunities associated with local production of diagnostic kits and antibody manufacturing. We aim to develop local expertise, build sustainable innovation ecosystem and partner with 20 universities in 20 states. We are creating a platform to teach relevant industry skills, so that our people will also profit from global innovations, and attain their personal and professional ambitions.

Our training workshop, in July, will expose participants to strategic skillset in molecular diagnostics value chain (biomarker discovery, recombinant antibody production, nano gold and immunolabelling technology, membrane stripping, cutting and assembly, etc).
