Synoptics is a company that specializes in the design, manufacture, and distribution of scientific instruments and equipment, particularly in the fields of digital imaging, microbiology, and laboratory equipment. The company operates through several divisions, including Syngene, Synbiosis, Fistreem, and Gallenkamp, each of which offers a range of products and services tailored to specific scientific applications. Synoptics' products include imaging systems, colony counters, and other laboratory equipment used in research, quality control, and education. The company provides support and maintenance services for its products, as well as training and technical assistance to its customers. With a history dating back to 1985, Synoptics has established itself as a leading provider of innovative scientific solutions, with a global presence and a reputation for quality, reliability, and customer service.

Synoptics was founded in 1985 by imaging experts from the University of Cambridge. The business grew quickly with many major companies using Synoptics to help develop imaging solutions across a wide range of applications. With a growing knowledge of CCD camera technology, frame grabbing and image capture techniques the company was able to enhance its skill sets within digital imaging.

In 1992, following a period of steady growth, Synoptics acquired the image analysis business of Ai Cambridge, UK in order to broaden its range of end-use products and develop its worldwide export markets. In 1995 it acquired Myriad Solutions, a manufacturer of graphics and accelerator products.

In 1997, the Syngene division was formed to exploit the Company’s experience in imaging DNA and protein gels. In 1998, the Synbiosis division was formed utilising expertise in the area of microbiology. Synoptics Health was formed in 2012 with the development of ProReveal – an in-situ test to detect residual proteins using fluorescence. In 2019 Fistreem was acquired and became an integral part of the Synoptics group with innovative products for water distillation, water purification and novel vacuum oven technologies

Since December 2007, Synoptics Ltd has been owned by SDI Group plc.

Synoptics divisions include:
Syngene, develops products specifically for gel documentation and fluorescence/chemiluminescence imaging.
Synbiosis, develops imaging solutions for microbial applications.
Fistreem, develops products for water distillation and vacuum oven technologies.
Synoptics Health focuses on imaging techniques within the clinical environment.

This diverse expertise makes the Synoptics Group a complete resource of life science imaging specialists. We are headquartered in Cambridge, a thriving scientific hub in the UK. Globally, our products are supported by an international network of over 100 highly-trained distributors, all of whom employ imaging specialists.
